Egypt and Jordan Reject Convergence Plan

(Yediot Ahronot) President Mubarak and King Abdullah create joint facade against unilateraly Israeli steps
Following their meeting in Sharm El Sheik Leaders of Egypt and Jordan reiterated their rejection to unilateral steps in the West Bank. In addition they called PM Olmert to initiate direct negotiations with the Palestinians that will bring to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Egypt and Jordan strongly opposed the Convergence Plan raised by PM Olmert. This resistance, especially the Jordanian, might hinder PM Olmert's efforts to receive legitimacy from the international community.

Following the announcement of his plan, PM Olmert declared that he will proceed to obtain the support of Egypt and Jordan and for that purpose he traveled to Amman and Sharm El Sheik recently. The joint statement of the two leaders strengthens the international demand from Israel to go back to the negotiations table and abandon unilateral initiatives against the Palestinians
