Reut's mission, as defined in our charter of January 2007, is "sustaining significant and substantive impact on the future of the State of Israel and the Jewish people as a whole and to leave an indelibly Israeli and Jewish imprint on the future of the world"
Each of these words carries great import which I will elaborate in the following paragraphs.
The Reut Institute's Vision and Mission - As is codified in Reut's constitution, "The Reut Institute is a Zionist organization. Our vision deals with the existence, security and quality of the State of Israel: a state whose existence is secured and whose citizens are safe; a prosperous state that is a leading nation in terms of quality of life; a state that is Jewish in character and in makeup, offering a qualitative Jewish experience that is distinctly Israeli at the heard of the Jewish world; a democratic state, which embraces universal humanistic values and aspires to create a society that sets an example for the family of nations"
Impact - Reut defines 'Impact' as the adaptation of values, priorities, patterns of conduct or habits that are essential to deal with the challenges facing the State of Israel and the Jewish people. This 'impact' is measured by a change in what people in positions of influence, leadership or authority say, do or write regarding relevant issues.
This definition is based on the Ron Heifetz's discussion of 'adaptive work' in his book Leadership without Easy Answers. 'Adaptive work' is the collection of actions essential for dealing with Adaptive Challenges. Moreover, the significance of the term 'impact' in Reut corresponds to the actions required to close 'relevancy gaps' or 'fundamental gaps' as defined by Dr Zvi Lanir.
Sustaining Impact - 'Sustaining' refers to the frequency and character of Reut's impact. As opposed to other organizations for which impact is restricted to a limited number of discrete events, such as publishing a book or holding a conference, Reut intends to maintain its impact throughout the year, for many years.
Significant Impact - The Reut Institute addresses only 'significant' issues, issues that hold great promise or pose grave threats to the State of Israel or the Jewish people.
The future of the State of Israel and the Jewish people - Reut believes it has the ability to achieve its aspirations of influencing the future of the State of Israel and the Jewish people. Our task is to impact the security and prosperity of the State of Israel and the Jewish people. Our past, present, and future analysis are only tools.
Jewish and Israeli imprint on the future of the world - In accordance with the principles of Tikkun Olam being "a light unto the nations," the Reut Institute is obligated to aid humanity face its challenges. It is within our abilities to make a meaningful impact on humanity that will echo the unique values and abilities of the State of Israel and the Jewish people.
Reut's mission is the bridge between its vision and its strategy and unique added value, a topic I will return to in a future post.
