Israeli Arabs and the 'Third Intifada'

Comments from both Hamas and the Islamic Movement in Israel regarding Israeli Arab cooperation in a Third Intifada have major political significance.

Head of the Northern faction of the Islamic movement in Israel, Sheikh Raed Salah recently said that "the time has come...to start an Islamic Muslim Intifada...in support of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque." At the same time, Bassam Naim, the Palestinian Health Minister from Hamas, said that "the Arabs of '48 will take part in the Third Intifada...since it won't occur due to political reasons but rather because of the need to protect the holy places."

These statements indicate the growing trend of Islamization and Palestinization among Israeli Arabs. The triangular relationship between the State of Israel, its Arab citizens and the Palestinian National Movement holds major political significance.

Therefore, there is a real need to update Israel's National Security Concept and to re-evaluate the place of Israeli Arabs in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
